The conventions that work alongside have also been a massive hit with fans, allowing them to get involved in the film hype as much as the actors, but in recent years the media have concentrated on the dedicated and somewhat professional looking fashion statements of the fans as well as the events themselves. It was pretty hard to know where to start with this as it's a big area to cover. So I used the trusty internet to look up sci-fi conventions and I came across the site www.scficonventions.com. This helped me find out a bit more about the convention side of sci-fi.
There are 3 main genres: sci-fi, fantasy and horror.
There is a lot more but these are the main. As I looked at the pictures on the website it's amazing how many stalls, banners, memorabilia there is. The atmosphere looks so exciting people look like they're generally enjoying themselves in this weird but wonderful place. People drive and fly from all over the world just to attend these conventions. There are a lot of sci-fi geeks about but geek has always been in fashion I am sure they call it geek sheek now days.
After looking at all the convention part of things I turned my thoughts back to what I know best fashion!
The fashion at these conventions was out of this world! (no pun included) from all in one leather cat suit and body armour to leotards which seem to be big in the sci-fi costume world. Some people call them unitards or all in ones. As I was flicking thorough some sites I came across flickr a site which you upload photos to and there was a whole section on fantasy and sci-fi costumes.
One costume that caught my eye was a lady in a pink leotard with outstanding green florescent hair. She was also holding a green florescent gun and some amazing thigh high green boots. They were no Jimmy Choo but they still looked sexy.
Madonna was the women trying to bring the leotard. She wore one in her video Hung Up and then Beyoncé wore one in her single ladies video there very popular. But these guys in the sci-fi world have been using leotards for years it's an essential dress code. But now everyone wants one American apparel is a fine example of the modern day leotard.
Going back to the lady in the costume she looked amazingly sexy and flirtatious in a futuristic way and she knew it she had this look on her face she knew she looked hot.
The next costume I seem to be coming across quit a lot a character called Harley Quinn she is a villainess from batman. She was wearing an all in one latex suit with a hat that was also made of latex. She is wearing these amazing knee high leather boots its very fetish but so sexy. I love that it hugs all your curvy parts and shows of the body well. The character has her own website she is always in black and red colours that would always make you stand out. The lady that's wearing the costume covered her face with white cream and big black rings around her eyes to cover her identity.
It's a place where you can be someone else maybe someone sexy when you're really shy or timid. Or even if you're normally quiet confident you might want to be someone that blends in. It just feels good when sometimes you can be someone else and these costumes can obviously do that for these people. Maybe the costumes make them feel like they have super powers or live in a fantasy world. Now who doesn't want that? The sexy fetish theme is around a lot in the sci-fi genre I think it ties in with fantasy the leather and latex. Very tight fitting and shapely even on the guys when they were there tight superman outfit or the batman costumes that show of a built in muscle enhancer.
A lot of the costumes at these sci-fi conventions are nearly all made by hand. They take them to the conventions to show of the amazing detail and sewing skills they have. The detail is unbelievable even the men enjoy sitting at a sewing machine making their own costumes every detail counts. There is normally a prize for best dressed or most like there character. There are a few videos online on YouTube if you would like to try and make your own. Give it ago and see if you can be someone else for a day or even night.
Going back to the male costumes there was a guy dressed as wolverine bounty hunter the costume was extreme. It had all the details right down to the scratches and the dents on the bright yellow amour. He had what looked like 5 inch claws which even though not real looked scary. His wrists had big guns on them very detailed and very manly. I am not sure how easy it would have been to move in the costume but it looked real, it did not look like there was a human inside.
A lot of people have said that sci-fi has lost its fashion roots in all the new films. No more foil suits and latex leotards or woman in caveman bikinis as it might be a bit sexiest. I am not sure if people take it all a bit far. The new fashion is tank tops and combat trousers; I say bring back the colourful clothes the tight fitting leotards and the leather boots. It makes it all fun and exciting it's what people enjoy when they see a sci-fi film the crazy costumes.
I couldn't finish this without mentioning the all-time classics in the sci-fi world Star Wars and Star Trek. These to ruled the sci-fi world for years with their wacky costumes. With the always pretty princess Leia in her with her cinnamonbun hair and that white dress. The storm troopers in the big plastic outfits and huge guns. The classic Star Trek tops with the classic Star Trek sign. Who could forget the light saver you could complete Luke Skywalker outfit without one.
