The founder of Apple calls it a day as his role of Chief Executive. Tim Cook is set to take over the duties as Jobs who has already justifiably been described as a legend in his own right, will become Chairman. However, in the event of this rather sad day for Apple and its whole community, will this mean some breathing space for their competitors?

There is a somewhat melancholy feeling when one sees a report such as this. It is like an end of an era only it is not. All Steve Jobs has done is take a back seat, and even though his resignation letter is very heart-warming he has not given a definitive reason for this change in role other than the fact that he can longer meet his duties as Apple's CEO.

Naturally the first conclusion the press has come to is that this change of role is due to his medical conditions. The BBC have reported that he has been on medical leave for an "undisclosed condition" since 17 January. Needless to say that whatever the reasons are, Jobs has provided some of the most innovative ideas, and worldwide success, that any technology company could be proud of.

He has changed the face of Apple by retaining their unique industry status with the Mac and completely revolutionising the company putting them at virtually untouchable heights with the release of the devices such as iPhone and iPad that by now need no introduction.

Apple and Steve Jobs

A successful leader and presenter such as Jobs is a tough act to follow. He has been involved in the production of Apple devices every step of the way and he addresses Apple's audience as a community, rather than just consumers. This is evident in his support which has been mentioned on many occasions in the press to not only the Apple "community", Apple's staff and also countries in need such as Japan following the tsunami earlier this year.

Unfortunately this was a move that some of us new were going to happen sooner or later. Running a global leading company with one's health not being 100% can only go on for so long, but no matter what we never saw demise in the work carried out by Jobs.

Steve Jobs began working for Apple in the 1970s and its Macintosh computers became hugely popular in the 1980s.

Following a disagreement with colleagues, he left the company in 1985, but returned in 1997 working projects such as the launch of the iMac computer.

Even though the letter "i" before their product's names was not a creation of Apple (neither is it patented by them), whenever someone hears an "I"-prefixed word, they would be expected to naturally think of an Apple product.

Following the success of the iMac we were greeted in the UK with the iPod in 2002. Apple announced their line of portable media players on 23 October 2001, which were released on 10 November 2001. The product line-up currently consists of the iPod Classic, the touchscreen iPod Touch, the iPod Nano, and the iPod Shuffle.

By this point iPod had paved the way for the legendary products to follow which are of course the iPhone and the iPad.

The first iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs on 9 January 2007, and released on 29 June 2007. The 5th generation iPhone is expected to be released globally in September 2011 inline with its long awaited operating system iOS 5.0.

The first iPad was released in April 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days. Since then several companies have tried to knock the device off of the top spot, and there were some very worthy contenders until Jobs pulled another rabbit out of the hat with iPad 2 which was unveiled on 2 March 2011.

Since 2010 Apple have represented, on average, 75% of tablet PC sales.

Apple in the future

The BBC and other analysts/press are predicting little change to the company as Jobs is still going to be able to provide input.

However, upon the news of the change of role, Apple's shares declined more than 5% in after-hours trading, suggesting that some investors were not so convinced and at the same time, HTC rose by 4.1% and Samsung Electronics gained 3.2%.

Apple has proved to be a fierce adversary. Bryan Ma of IDC Asia-Pacific told the BBC "Maybe this will make the playing field a bit more level." However, I don't think HTC and Samsung should be taking a sigh of relief yet as in Steve Jobs' resignation he has intermitted that there is a clear roadmap and project plan ahead for the future.

The BBC quoted Michael Gartenberg Research Director of Gartner saying that "At the end of the day, consumers don't buy products from Apple because they're from Steve Jobs, they buy them because they meet their needs and they're good products, and they'll continue to do that."

Oh really - watch the video below of the unveiling of iPad 2 by Apple which is posted on Youtube, and watch how Jobs' describes the product, then see if you agree by the end of it.

Any of us that have seen the film "The Social Network" will know that the big creators of our favourite social networking sites are also individuals that are most likely (on occasion) to deal with court cases. However, this is now not the case and it appears that any individual Twitter-user in England or Wales could have court proceedings brought against them according to the Attorney General.
For centuries copyright has been given through legislation to authors and artists of all medias. However this legislation only applies to works that are in a concrete form, such as a manuscript, play script, written or recorded musical score, photographs, sculptures, collages 3D or 2D visual work of art, works of architecture and works of artistic craftsmanship (though most artistic works are protected irrespective of artistic quality). However, this is a requirement for works of architecture and artistic craftsmanship. Therefore these items need to be in a physical form that is capable of being copied, before the legislation applies automatic rights to prevent the piece being copied.
