How did the band originally form?
Myself and Rich had known each other from collage about five years ago and we lost touch. I started dating a girl about two years ago and to my suprise Rich was her brother. As we were both musically involved we just decided to write a few songs as a hobby rather than to go out and perform. We would play songs we had written together at parties and friends and family loved them.So we decided to take our music out to the stage and it has just progressed from there.
Small world isn't it? So you both do vocals and guitar?
Rich mainly sings and plays rhythem guitar and I play lead guitar and do backing vocals.
I have just been listening to some of your songs. They really have a calming affect.
Yeah, we both love to play music that people will actually listen to and that chills you out. We have been pre judged as late when we tell old friends about our music, they tend to think we play punk or metal. We love to write emotional songs, songs that have meaning.
That was another thing I liked about your music, the music contrasts well with the vocals and the composition of the lyrics. Do you have musical backgrounds from school? I note you said you started in college.
Well to tell the truth, I was into punk as a kid, listening to bands like The Offspring and The Dead Kennedys. I had played in a few bands and wanted to take music up as a profession when I was younger, that's why I studied it at collage. Rich was more the type of guy who wanted to record rather than gig. He only learned guitar in the past two years, he was more of a singer.
I think the name White Valentine is great, do you mind if I ask where it came from?
To tell you the honest truth, it was the first name we had come up with (lol). Rich's surname is White and we were just going to use our surnames but I have an Irish surname. "White Flanagan" didnt sound to good. I just mentoined "White Valentine" we both liked it and just rolled with it.
It's great when that happens though - a name just pops into your head that you instantly like.
So, what song did you enjoy recording the most and where did it come from?
Well at the moment we have been writing more than recording, but the song I enjoyed working on the most is "Goodbye My Friend". It's an emotional track, with a great melody. We wanted to give the song emotion and feel, so we didnt over do it on the choards. It's just so simple to play but really laid back.
What has been your major gig to date?
The Doncaster Little Theater on 2nd December - a local gig big production and a great atmosphere. It's great for our friends and family to come and watch us doing what we enjoy. Huge stage too, dressing rooms and free tea and coffee which are always a bonus. They make us feel welcome and it will always be a pleasure for us to play there
I notice you are back in Doncaster at the end of December and Sheffield in January. Other than that what's on the cards for 2010?
Well we're in the studio in January to record a self published album "Goodbye My Friend" and then we have a few more gigs pending that we will hopefully confirm soon. Two in Doncaster, London, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds. We have been getting a lot of interest in Wilstshire too so we will look into playing for the guys down there
So I take it you do all of the organising yourself? I have self published for years and whilst you call all of the shots, it can sometimes be really exhausting.
Yeah, we get some help from Malc, he is recording us, taking photos stuff like that, but when you are an unsigned band you have to do all the hard work yourself and it is hard but you reap what you sow. The more you put in, the more you will get back.
Are you, or have you considered working on any collobarations with DJs?
If the chance came along then why not. At the end of the day we love writing music, and we like to mess about doing little remixes of our own stuff in practice sometimes.
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out, or who is looking to get into music?
Erm, just enjoy it really. You will get a lot of crtitsism like everyone else; just don't take it to heart. Do what you enjoy doing and what makes you happy
